Not every novel needs a sensitivity reader. My last two did not. However, this one is full of the type of conflict that made me wish for one. I know many people, and it’s a diverse crowd. It’s not always easy to relate well enough to write them convincingly. You can walk a mile in someone’s shoes and only achieve knowledge of their footwear.
I have a writer friend who refuses to acknowledge the need for sensitivity readers. He feels it is taking the bite out of writing. Of course, he’s entitled to his opinion, but I don’t feel that a proficient sensitivity reader tries to change plot, dialogue, or character in any major way. Sometimes writing is supposed to cause outrage and offense; that is the point of many great works of literature that had plenty of “bite”. There are many published in recent times that have not been sanded smooth. A sensitivity reader will not water down your message.
My experience with sensitivity readers is limited (a grand total of one), but I appreciated the help. The goal was to be aware of any overused tropes or stereotypes. In my opinion, it’s best to avoid those in writing anyway unless the trope or stereotype is at the center of conflict. The bonus was having another reader, reading with an agenda that not all readers will have.
No regrets here. If you haven’t tried a sensitivity reader but feel your work could use that type of critique, why not?
First paragraph caught my attention.
Well done!
Have another grid to filter what you share about sensivitive writer. It is called the gift of mercy. Your’s is working!
Do you collaberate?
