Wednesday

Wednesday

Since the actress who played the original Wednesday Addams’s death, I’ve had Wednesday on my mind. As a character, she was ahead of her time. I always wondered about that choice of name for a character, but it makes sense when “Wednesday’s child is full of woe” is introduced as the reason in the Netflix series. It deepens the gloomy and morbid demeanor that we can’t help but love about Wednesday Addams.

Not many people love Wednesday as a day of the week, though. For one, it’s spelled wrong.

Wednesday has a feeling unlike the others. When I taught, I loathed Wednesdays as they had the feeling of not being close enough to the weekend to find a reason to celebrate it. Very much the idea of “hump day”. When I was younger, Wednesday nights bore the onus of church. For a day named after Woden, A.K.A. Odin, or Mercury, it certainly seemed to be a negative day.

But that’s over now, even on a rainy and gloomy Wednesday like today. Embrace the gloom. It’s the spirit of Wednesday. RIP Lisa Loring who will always be the real Wednesday.
